Plastic in our Ocean - How big a problem is it?

Plastic in our Ocean - How big a problem is it?

Currently it is estimated that there's around 100 million tonnes of plastic already in our oceans. On top of that, figures show that around 12 million tonnes of plastic are entering our ocean year on year, meaning this problem is only getting worse.

In some areas, the buildup of plastics is estimated to span 5 million square miles. To put it into perspective, that's the equivalent of the area of the U.S. plus India. Mind-blowing!

Eighty percent of this plastic debris comes from the land. It washes out to sea from our beaches, streets and highways. It flows out through storm drains into streams and rivers.

Another large proportion of waste plastic in our oceans is accounted for by discarded fishing nets - lost or deliberately abandoned by fishing boats. These waste plastics are incredibly hazardous to marine life. Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by plastic pollution every year.

Here at Marble Swimwear, we're taking every step we can to ensure we are operating with our planet in mind. For us, where our pieces are intended to be enjoyed on the beach, the ocean was an important place for us to start.

With this in mind, we're so excited to be launching our next collection next month. By wearing this collection, you'll be able to help us clean our seas. It truly marries our passion for the planet and our obsession with swimwear, and we can't wait to share it with you!
